Hong Kong police tighten vigil to mark Tiananmen Square massacre

HONG KONG – Hong Kong police cordoned off a busy shopping district late on Saturday and barred people from entering a park that traditionally lit a mass candlelight vigil on the anniversary of whose name. 1989 Tiananmen Square MassacreA memorial event that has now been banned.

Barricading was put in place throughout much of the park throughout Saturday, but in the evening hundreds of people quietly swept the park’s periphery. Many people who staged small acts of defiance were stopped and searched by the police amid heavy security presence. Sometimes there was a scuffle.
