A body has been found after a passenger on a P&O cruise ship fell overboard near the coast sydney,

nsw Police received reports that a man had drowned just after 4am on Monday morning in the water off Pacific Adventure, just 10 nautical miles off Sydney Heads.

An intensive search was immediately launched before a man’s body was found at 10.30 am.

The police will prepare a report for the coroner and begin an investigation into the death.

A man aboard the Pacific Adventure told 2GB radio that he and 2,600 other passengers were picking For a ‘man overboard call’ early in the morning.

He said, ‘We woke up to the call from the man overboard and from there it all went on for a few hours.’

A driver who was supposed to be picking up passengers from Pacific Adventure reported that he had been told not to hurry because ‘the ship has stopped outside the head and someone has gone into the water.’

P&O Cruises had previously said that staff were providing support to the passenger’s family.

‘P&O’s Pacific Adventure is currently conducting a search and rescue operation in Sydney after a person raised the alarm on board the ship at 4am,’ a spokeswoman said ahead of the search.

‘This guest’s family is being cared for by our onboard team while every effort is made to locate them.’

Pacific Adventure is returning from a three-day trip to Queensland’s Morton Island, which is understood to be themed as Elvis.

A number of NSW Police Marine Area Command resources, including a rescue helicopter, were deployed to search for the man.
