The cricket fan who became an overnight sensation on social media with the video revealed his identity as Shobhit Pandey, a resident of Maheshwari Mohal. He said that he reached the Green Park Stadium with his sister on the first day of the India vs New Zealand Test match.
Shobhit also clarified to reporters at the stadium that he was not eating gutkha while watching the match, but had a ‘sweet betel nut’ in his mouth, which he had taken from his sister.

Reacting to the viral video, thousands of people shared comments and memes on Twitter. In the video, Shobhit can be seen talking to someone chewing on the mobile phone. The girl sitting next to him looked at him and shook his hand and said they were on camera.
Shobhit further elaborated that it was after 70 overs were completed, while Shreyas Iyer was at the crease with 54 and Jadeja on 26 when the camera turned towards him. He had received a call from his friend, who is also a cricket fan, inquiring about his whereabouts. He told her that he was sitting near gate number 11, while the person on the phone was at gate number 8. The first 10-second video of this young man was shared on Twitter with the caption, ‘These things you will see only in Kanpur. , Stadium’. Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer shared a meme from ‘Phir Hera Pheri’ on the social media app. One has put a photo of Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan chewing paan and tagged it – “Kanpuriye”. Pandey said that he is shocked and cannot believe that such a small talk will go viral on social media in a matter of minutes. He said that he was hurt by the lewd comments about his sister sitting next to him.
“Everyone knows that Kanpur is famous for ‘supari’ (betel nut) related products and ‘pan masala’, and there was nothing strange in that,” he said.
