Former Columbia football star Marcellus Wiley discusses student protests: ‘I’m disgusted’

East nfl defensive end Marcellus Wiley said he was “disgusted” by the events at Columbia University.

Wiley, who played college football at Columbia, recently joined Dan Dakich Outkick’s “Don’t @ Me” To address the ongoing protests at the Ivy League university. Similar demonstrations have been taking place on college campuses across the United States in recent weeks.

“I’m disappointed,” Willie began. “I don’t take political sides…it doesn’t matter which side you are on politically in this matter. You don’t have the right to protest and go unruly. Now protest peacefully, go do that.”

Wiley argued that protesting doesn’t have to be “the end of everything.”

“I talk to these kids and I know my foundation, Project Transition, I’m always out in the community and talking to these kids… Half of these kids don’t even know why they’re there to protest.” It’s surreal… like it’s crazy.” Willie told Dakich. “And those who know also know that this is not the end all. Apart from protesting, you also have to take other steps and measures.”

“So I don’t know why these kids are going to this extent…creating conventions, destroying their university, their property, their reputation, because when you leave people ask ‘Where did you go to school? They went?’ And then their mind goes to two places: the positive, the academic reputation, the great curriculum… and then the awesome Columbia… the place where all the protests happen, the place where all the kids can’t even be controlled, That’s where the lead is, don’t move fast enough, so it hurts your reputation, but we will rebound because we have to rebound.”

Then Willie pointed out of stanford university Dealing with student protests.

“I wish we had handled it like Stanford did. Looked at some schools in Texas, looked at some schools in Florida… Stanford wrote a letter, they said look, before you go out, let me tell you about the rules of engagement. Let me tell you… you are allowed to protest at these hours, in these places, go ahead. I wish Colombia had done this and then if you choose to violate these policies, there will be immediate consequences. ”

Like other universities across the country, some Stanford students have set up an encampment in the White Plaza portion of the Northern California college campus to protest Israel’s military offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Stanford President Richard Saylor and Provost Jenny Martinez said the students’ encampment violates policies that prohibit overnight camping on campus. He said the university has turned over the names of students caught violating campus policies to the Office of Community Standards (OCS) for disciplinary proceedings.

Protest organizers have condemned the university’s response to the student protests.

Wiley drafted the Bills in the second round of 1997 nfl draft Out of Colombia. After four years in Buffalo, Willie went on to play for the Chargers, Cowboys and Jaguars.
