Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad among 43 cities in the state to join UN climate campaign

At least 43 cities in Maharashtra, including Pune, have joined the United Nations-backed Race to Zero campaign, which aims to halve global emissions by 2030 and includes participation from companies, sectors, financial and educational institutions.

Ahead of the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) of the parties in Glasgow from October 31 to November 12, Minister of State for Environment and Climate Change Aaditya Thackeray said on Thursday that the 43 cities and urban agglomerations participating in the campaign are part of? AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation).

Of these, five cities in western Maharashtra, Mumbai, Nashik, Aurangabad, Kalyan-Dombivli, Pune and Nagpur had participated in the campaign earlier this year.

Cities joining the campaign will strive to prevent future climate threats, create jobs, and unlock equitable, sustainable development. These cities must publicly acknowledge and recognize a global climate emergency, pledging to reach net zero emissions by 2040 or earlier, while keeping climate resilience in line with urban decision-making.

Thackeray made the announcement as part of India’s Road to COP26 event, The Hub Live at Climate Week NYC 2021 and as part of the 24-hour Global Citizen Live campaign at the Gateway of India in Mumbai.
