City council repeals Calgary’s single-use bylaw after public outcry – Calgary | globalnews.ca

Calgary City Council has officially rescinded a bylaw that required businesses to charge for paper bags and only hand out single-use items upon customer request.

Only three councilors voted against repealing the city’s single-use bylaw: Courtney Walcott, Courtney Penner and Gian-Carlo Carra.

The bylaw, which the council approved in 2022, set a minimum charge of 15 cents for paper bags and $1 for reusable bags, and required businesses to collect single-use utensils, cutlery, napkins only upon customer request. There was a need to provide more spices.

The new rules faced significant public opposition when they were implemented earlier this year, prompting the City Council to begin the process of repealing the rule just two weeks later.
