Charla Cook and her husband are hoping that their twin daughters will be born and will be strong enough to undergo surgery to separate them.

In her third trimester, pregnant with twins, which most doctors have said won’t survive, Charla Cook does what every mom does: She clings to hope. Her daughters’ chances of survival were so low, she was offered the chance to terminate her pregnancy, but she declined. Already a mother of three, Cook said she and her husband wanted, planned and prayed for another pregnancy. “We were so excited to welcome our fourth and final child. But then hearing this news, it was devastating,” admitted Cook. But it was only halfway through the pregnancy that she and her husband realized they were expecting twins. At a routine doctor’s appointment with 21 weeks on, Cook noticed what appeared to be two heads on an ultrasound. The tech confirmed this and then left the room, returning with a doctor. “She came back and continued to do a little scan and then she told me she thought they were connected,” she remembered. Twins, as it turned out, share a heart wall, but each has its own heart. However, there are many shared organs, including the liver, which makes them nearly impossible to separate. Most doctors said it couldn’t be done, but a team in Florida is willing to try. “That’s the only hospital that has told us this. So we had some hope after hearing that news, after hearing so many negative things. So many places and professionals,” Cook said. The journey so far has been overwhelming, she said, but she is hopeful for a miracle. “The girls have survived so far, so I know they are fighters,” Cook said. A fundraising page has been set up to help the family with travel and medical expenses.
