The US warned of danger at the airport in Kabul and asked citizens to “leave immediately”.

NS US embassy warns Americans It asked anyone outside the perimeter to “quit immediately” to stay away from Kabul airport, citing unidentified security threats.

The warning came as the last of an estimated 1,500 Americans still in Afghanistan tried to get to the airport before the US withdrawal on August 31. Thousands of Afghan civilians are camping outside the airport’s perimeter in desperate efforts. Try to escape on the last flights.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the embassy’s advice, or whether it describes a specific new threat or reflects ongoing concerns. But the warning cited three areas of particular concern.

“US citizens who are at Abbey Gate, East Gate or North Gate must now leave immediately,” the statement said.

The US government has been warning about potential security hazards at the airport, and access to the airport has been adjusted accordingly, with some gates temporarily closed.
