Africatown Heritage House Museum one step closer to completion

MOBILE, Ala (WALA) — After years of work, the Africatown Heritage House Museum is one more step closer to completion.

A portion of the pre-fabricated building was delivered to the site on Friday and the work of assembling it is underway.

The Clotilda is the last known slave ship to arrive in America and soon Mobile County will open a museum meant to never be forgotten.

“The look and feel of the parts are huge,” said Shari Broussard, director of Mobile County Public Affairs.

The Africatown Heritage House Museum has taken years to build.

The $1.3 million community project is led by Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood.

The construction of the building is expected to take several months until it is handed over to the History Museum of Mobile to set up exhibitions.

“The History Museum of Mobile is showcasing 110 enslaved West Africans who were brought to Alabama on the Clotilda and the story of the community that followed,” Broussard said.

Mobile County leaders hope the museum helps promote tourism in the Africatown community and provides a place to learn for years to come.

“It’s an important story, it’s an inspirational story and hopefully it will be an educational experience for everyone and it will provide a solid link to the past,” Broussard said.

It will take months for the museum to open. They are hoping that the ribbon cutting will take place in the middle of next year.
