3 killed in fire in apartment complex in Granite City

GRANITE CITY (KMOV.com) – Three people were killed on Thursday after a fire broke out at an apartment complex in Granite City, the Granite City Fire Department said.

The fire started at around 12:45 pm on Thursday at East 23 and Kate Street. Granite City Fire Chief Rich Wilson said people were jumping from the second floor of the building when firefighters arrived.

Wilson said 15 people, 13 adults and two children exited the building. None of those people suffered serious injuries.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal is actively investigating the fire. The reason is still unknown. Fighting the fire was difficult, Wilson said, as the building had broken into several apartments.

A spokesman said the Red Cross was helping 15 survivors of the fire.
