Regina Police Service hosts Indigenous Police Academy at First Nations University globalnews.ca

The Regina Police Service (RPS) is hosting it events At Canada’s First Nations University, an effort is being made to recruit future Indigenous police officers, security officers, special constables and community safety officers.

RPS Const. Stuart Keshane said the program gives aspiring executives a glimpse of higher education.

“It’s just to give them some experience about what the Saskatchewan Police College is like,” Keshen said.

Treaty 4 Police Academy has been operational since 2005. The event started on 29 April and will run till 10 May.

“During those two weeks, students learn about the ground level of policing with various presentations from our units within the organization,” Keshen said. This is the first year the two-week program has been sponsored entirely by the Regina Police Service, he said.

Students participate in firearms training, first aid courses, exercises and cultural sessions. If students decide to pursue policing, they will enroll in the 20-week Saskatchewan Policing Program.

River Dubois is spending two weeks in the program with the goal of becoming a police officer.

Dubois said building relationships with fellow students has been one of her favorite parts of the program.

“I feel good when I have people with similar interests, who want to help people, the same physical pain that we’re going through.”

Arlene Morin recently received her Diploma in Corrections and jumped straight into the program to see if policing was the right path for her.

“I can have a full perspective on what I’m most interested in,” she said.

Although Morin isn’t sure yet if policing is the path she wants to take, the program has opened her eyes to all the different options within RPS.

“You don’t have to just patrol. You can do K9 unit, drug unit and there are a lot of different options for your career,” she said.
