New Delhi, 26 July

Amid a stalemate in Parliament, the Congress on Tuesday asked why the government was not allowing an immediate debate on inflation and GST when the entire opposition was demanding it.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said issues including demonetisation, Jammu and Kashmir and agrarian distress have been debated several times under Rule 267.

“The entire opposition is demanding an urgent debate in Rajya Sabha under Rule 267 on price hike and GST. The rule has been invoked several times, most recently on November 16, 2016, to debate on demonetisation, on August 10, 2016. To discuss Jammu. and Kashmir, and to debate the agrarian crisis on April 23, 2015. Why is the Modi government denying it now?” He asked.

Both the Houses of Parliament have failed to do any significant work in the wake of the opposition’s constant protests demanding an immediate discussion on the price hike and GST.

The government claims that it will discuss it once Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recovers from Kovid and comes back.
