WHO chief says COVID-19 vaccine boosters are ‘unethical’ and ‘unfair’

The increased use of boosters is “immoral, unfair and unjust and must stop,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told CNN’s Becky Anderson on Tuesday.

“Initiating a booster is really the worst we can do as a global community. It is unjust and even unfair because we will not stop the pandemic by ignoring the entire continent, and a continent that has no manufacturing capacity by other means.” is,” she said.

WHO has recommended: additional vaccine doses for immunocompromised people, But it strongly opposes the widespread use of booster shots until much of the world has been vaccinated against the first round of COVID-19 shots.

Tedros said South America, North America, Europe, Asia, Oceania have all given more than 50% of their populations the same dose of vaccine, while only 7% of Africa’s population has received a single dose.

In September, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized a booster dose of Pfizer’s vaccine for some people.

In addition the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has directed EU countries to “issue official recommendations on the use of booster doses, taking into account emerging effectiveness data and limited safety data”.

The EMA says that for people with normal immune systems, a booster dose of BioNTech/Pfizer “may be considered for at least 6 months after a second dose for people 18 years of age and older.”

The agency is currently evaluating data to support a booster dose for Moderna Vaccine.
