Pope Francis is in Edmonton for an open-air mass on Tuesday morning.

Mass Commonwealth Stadium Begins at 10:15 a.m., but participants are asked to arrive at 8:30 a.m. The doors of the football stadium open at 7:30 a.m.

The crowd is just part of Pope’s visit to the Edmonton area, which began on Sunday when he landed at the airport.

On Monday, the Pope joined survivors at the Erminskin Indian Residential School in Maskavasis, Alta. The Pope also made a stop at the Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples, an indigenous church in downtown Edmonton.

During his time in the Masque, Francis expressed his grief and apologized for the role of the Roman Catholic Church in the cultural destruction and forced assimilation of indigenous peoples, culminating in residential schools.

“I am deeply sorry,” he said.

Tuesday morning’s mass tickets were free and were issued online in three different blocks. Many tickets were reserved for residential/day school survivors, elders and those with knowledge.

The Pope is scheduled to visit Lac Ste after the congregational prayer on Tuesday. Anne, where a major pilgrimage takes place every year.

Pope Francis’ visit to Canada will continue on July 27 for Quebec City, where he is to meet Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Government General Marie Simon. He is to hold private meetings at La Citadelle and later give a public speech.

The Pontiff is then scheduled to travel to Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre for a mass on 28 July. 10,000 to 15,000 guests are estimated to attend.

Pope Francis is scheduled to meet indigenous leaders of eastern Canada on July 29 before leaving for Iqaluit. Upon arrival, Pope will hold a private meeting with residential school survivors before participating in a public community event.
