Two people injured in shooting at Virginia High School

Two people were injured in a shooting at a Virginia high school on Monday afternoon.
Newport News police said in a statement that two victims at Heritage High School were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds that were not considered life-threatening.

Newport News School spokeswoman Michelle Price said by telephone that the incident had been brought under control and that school officials were preparing to drop the students home. Classes resumed on 8 September, so the students were in their second full week at school.

Police said the students were being taken to a tennis court where the parents could meet them.

Videos from the scene showed the parents talking on cell phones on the sidewalk. Crime scene tapes were spread across parts of the school’s parking lot, and a police command truck was parked nearby.

Police were investigating the shooting and found that reports of active shooters in other schools were false.
