Milan man accused of beating woman, causing serious brain injuries

A Milan man was arrested Friday for allegedly beating a woman who suffered extensive brain injuries, according to Rock Island County Court records.

Ward F. Davis, 39, has been charged with aggravated battery causing extreme bodily harm, a Class 3 offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Court documents said Davis hit victim Julie Bowser Shell on the head several times with a blunt object, causing extensive brain injuries. According to a release issued Monday from the Milan Police Department, Shell is currently in critical care.

Milan police officers responded to Pine View Apartments at 718 Hillcrest Road just after 11 a.m. on Friday, the release said. Someone called and told that the shell was lying on the road and the gas box in the laundry room of the apartment building was on fire.

Davis is being held in Rock Island County Jail on $250,000 (10%) bond. The bond includes a condition if he is to be released that he has no contact with Shell.

Both Davis and Shell were listed in court documents as living in Pine View apartments, but in different apartment numbers.

Davis’ preliminary hearing is set for October 5.
