Tamil Nadu Rural Local Bodies Elections: 73.27 percent voter turnout recorded in the second phase

The Tamil Nadu State Election Commission (TNSEC) said that the polling percentage of 73.27 per cent (approximately) was recorded on Saturday in the second phase of rural local body elections held in nine districts in Tamil Nadu.

According to the polling body, Villupuram recorded the highest voter turnout of 83.6 per cent and Tirunelveli the lowest at 65 per cent. Kallakurichi recorded 82 per cent, Ranipet 75.3, Thirupathur 73.5, Kancheepuram 72, Chengalpattu and Tenkasi 70 each and Vellore 68 per cent.

Voting, which started on a slow pace in the morning, recorded 9.27 per cent later in the day and 60.34 per cent till around 3 pm.

Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tenkasi, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruppattur, Tirunelveli, Villupuram and Kallakurichi were the nine districts where polling was held in two phases. Counting of votes will take place on October 12.

In Vellore, a DMK member said in an inebriated state, allegedly stabbing an AIADMK worker over an anxious brawl at a polling booth in Anaikatu in the district. In Gerugambakkam, DMK and AMMK supporters clashed, some of whom suffered injuries.

Meanwhile, the opposition AIADMK has demanded the Election Commission to webcast/telecast the process of counting of votes on October 12 in the districts where elections were held.
