The current season is probably the last time we will see teams take the field with their existing squads as there will be a huge auction with two new teams and most of the stars released for it. So how does the team qualify for the final? And why aren’t their two semi-finals like the other tournament?

Here’s everything you need to know

Why not the semifinals?

The concept of semi-finals was abolished in order to provide a fair chance for the more consistent teams to qualify for the final. In other words, for teams that finish in the top-two of the league stage, their season ends with a loss in the semi-finals (one match). Therefore, a new format was introduced with two qualifiers and one eliminator to give them two chances to reach the summit.

What is Qualifier 1?

The winner of Qualifier 1 gets a direct entry to the final. It is held between the top two teams of the league stage. However the loser gets another chance in Qualifier 2. This year DC finished on top while CSK finished second. They will meet on Sunday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

What is an Eliminator?

The Eliminator is a competition held during the league stage between the third and fourth placed teams. The winner of this match gets entry into Qualifier 2 while the losing team is eliminated. This year RCB finished third and KKR fourth. This year the Eliminator will be played on October 11 (Monday) at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

What is Qualifier 2?

Qualifier 2 is held between the losing team of Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator. The winner of this competition enters the finals. Qualifier 2 will be held at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on 13 October (Wednesday).

The Grand Finale has been scheduled on 15 October at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
