Last month, a settler was shot dead by a Palestinian gunman, triggering a retaliatory strike.
The Israeli military confirmed the incident on Monday, saying the Israelis had caused “significant damage” and that the police had launched an investigation. Defense Minister Benny Gantz issued a statement saying anyone who throws stones or sets cars on fire is “a terrorist and will be dealt with”.
Israeli officials have vowed to take action against repeated settler violence in recent months. Palestinian and Israeli rights groups say the military rarely intervenes and often takes the side of the settlers. About half a million Israelis live in 130 settlements and dozens of unauthorized outposts in the occupied West Bank. Palestinians see settlements as the main obstacle to resolving the conflict.
