The Preakness Stakes There is a historic race that dates back to 1873. That initial race was won by Survivor.
The Preakness Stakes is the second race of the Triple Crown series. To date, there have been 13 Triple Crown winners. The most recent was when Justify won in 2018.
Records can be broken during any race, but this feat is difficult to achieve. Many of the horses with the fastest Preakness times in history have held their records for decades.

Secretariat, widely considered the greatest racehorse in the history of the sport, holds the crown for fastest record in the Preakness Stakes.
Secretariat became the first horse in more than two decades to win the Triple Crown in 1973 and did so with record-setting wins at American horse racing’s biggest events.
In May 1973, Secretariat started Preakness Race Dropped out at the end but showed his speed abilities with a burst of pace that put him in the lead.

However, for decades, the official record set by the Secretariat continued to miscalculate at 1:54 2/5.
In 2012, the record was officially corrected after a forensic review of the tapes revealed that the race timer had failed to properly keep track of the time.
Secretariat was inducted into Racing’s Hall of Fame in 1974.
In recent years, one of the racehorses to come closest to the record set by Triple Crown winner Secretariat was Swiss Skydiver in the Preakness Stakes in October 2020.
The race was held five months later than its original start date. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Allowing Swiss skydivers several months to mature before competing.

The female horse commanded the course, defeating Kentucky Derby champion Authentic with a time of 1:53.10, the second best time in race history.
Initially, the skydiver maintained his speed during the start of the race. In the final stage, she went head-to-head with the derby champion. The race ended with a photo finish, with the Swiss skydiver ultimately winning.

To date, there have only been six female horses to win the Preakness Stakes.
Tank’s Prospect set the third best time in the Preakness Stakes in 1985 when he defeated the favorite Chief Crown by a head in a time of 1:53.4.
Tank’s Prospect remained at the back of the group for most of the race. However, in the final minutes, he made a breakthrough in the sprint and finished as the winner setting the Preakness record.
The young horse did not perform well in the first leg of the Triple Crown series, running seventh in the Kentucky Derby.
Tank’s Prospect’s racing career ended due to an injury suffered in the Belmont Stakes.
Coming in at fourth was Louis Quatorze, best known for his blazing fast victory in the 1996 Preakness Stakes, where he finished with a time of 1:53.43.
Earlier, the young horse had suffered a disastrous end a few weeks earlier During the Kentucky Derby, Coming in at 16th place. However, his victory in the Preakness helped cement his racing legacy.

He maintained his lead for most of the race, making him the 1996 Preakness Stakes champion and one of the fastest runners in the race to date.

The stallion’s story is another example of a racehorse winning the Preakness after trailing at the start of the event.
In the May 2007 race, from 20 seconds to the one-minute mark of the race, Curlin fell 13 lengths behind first place but rallied to defeat Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense.
