There is a fight over who gets to pay attention to the plastic beverage bottles thrown by consumers first.

Bottle trash has become a hot commodity as companies try to make their goods and packaging more sustainable. Recycled polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, flake, typically made from old beverage containers, has cost Europe about 35% since January, according to data from the Independent Commodity Intelligence Services. Higher oil and petrochemical prices have also driven up the cost of pure PET plastic, but not by as much.
