SQ spokesman Sargent said some 160,000 vacationers took to the road during the province’s two-week holiday, making it one of the busiest times of the year on Quebec highways. Katherine Bernard said.

“During the next two weeks all the police officers of the Sorte du Québec will be present to conduct a large-scale operation on roads and trails, various lakes and rivers,” Bernard said.

Barnard said that by mid-July, police had seen a slight increase in fatal collisions. The provincial police have registered 113 fatal accidents claiming lives of 113 people so far this year.

“Last year there were nine fatal road crashes during a two-week period and three people died,” Bernard said.

According to Ryan, the 75 days of summer beginning in May and ending in August are the deadliest days in Quebec when it comes to road accidents.

Both the provincial police and CAA Quebec advise drivers to slow down.
