opinion | A Wise Senate Gun Deal

The Senate voted 64-34 late Tuesday to debate the bipartisan gun violence bill, and its major merit is that it focuses too much on the source of mass shootings: young, troubled men.

The bill covers three main areas: funding for states to enforce so-called red-flag laws and strengthening mental-health services; funding for increased school safety; and additional scrutiny of gun buyers who are under the age of 21 or have been domestic abusers, as well as increased penalties for purchasing a gun or smuggling guns as a straw buyer.
