Londoners considering buying solar panels for their home now have a handy tool they can use to assess the environmental and financial benefits of doing so.

City officials revealed last week that they have partnered with Alberta-based website MyHEAT Solar to provide an online tool that uses Google’s 3D mapping data. project sunroof,

Through the MyHEAT Solar website, Londoners can see at a glance which part of their home would be best suited for solar panels, and how many hours of useful sunlight their roof receives each year.

Residents are also able to see how much of their roof can be used for solar panels, and if they want to fully cover their household hydro costs, they will be given a suggested rate based on their average monthly hydro bill. Gaya installation size is provided.

For example, residents with a monthly hydro bill of $100 should install 32 solar panels, each 1.65 by 0.992 m, to generate approximately 9 kWh of electricity annually, according to the website.

Londoners can also see how much the panels are estimated to cost after incentives, how much money they will save after 25 years of use, and their estimated environmental impact.

New online tool comes almost a year after Climate Emergency Action Plan supported by members of the London City Council, Councilors declared a climate emergency three years ago. The plan includes targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55 percent by 2030, 65 percent by 2035, 75 percent by 2040, and reach net-zero by 2050.

“When talking to Londoners we find what kind of climate action they want to take – typically solar panels on roofs… We have found, just talking to people, (that) it is always a popular topic. comes to the fore,” said Jamie Skimming, manager of energy and climate change with the City of London.

“In our climate emergency plan … one of our big areas of focus is essentially we want to give Londoners the tools and resources to help them figure out what kind of climate action they want to take, and Installing solar panels on their roof is one of many options Londoners could do.

Skimming adds that using solar panels in the home will also reduce demand for gas-fired power plants in the province.

In a statement, Jay Stanford, the city’s director of climate change, environment and waste management, said London’s Climate Action Plan identified single-family homes as the second largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the city.

“Refurbishing existing homes with energy savings and zero-emission improvements such as solar panels is a priority included in London’s plan,” he said.
