February 2002 – At least 58 people were killed when a train carrying Hindu pilgrims caught fire. The train halted briefly at a station in Gujarat, where the local population was a majority Muslim. The Gujarat government later learned that the fire was deliberately set, part of a pre-planned attack, and that those responsible were Muslims. Riots erupt in the days following the fire and Modi is accused of ignoring the violent protests that killed nearly 1,000 people, mostly Muslims.

5 August 2019 – Tension escalates between India and Pakistan After Modi’s announcement that India would revoke a constitutional provision giving Jammu and the state Kashmir Autonomy to establish its own laws. In the wake of the announcement, widespread communications blackouts have been reported in the Muslim-majority region.

8 August 2019 – Modi’s address on television In which he claims that revoking Kashmir’s autonomous status will promote stability, reduce corruption and boost the economy. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister says that the country will be cautious, but no military option is being considered. NS United Nations issued a statement calling on both the countries to resolve the issue peacefully respecting human rights in the region.

11 December 2019 – Parliament passed controversial bill Which will fast-track citizenship for religious minorities including Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhist, Jains, Parsis and Christian, from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Opposition parties say the bill is unconstitutional as it bases citizenship on an individual’s religion and will further marginalize India’s Muslim community. Modi expressed his support for the measure via Twitter, “This bill will ease the suffering of many people who faced harassment for years,” he said.

19 December 2019 – Deadly protests in at least 15 cities Against the citizenship law despite a ban on public gatherings in many areas. At least three people died amid the violence, as thousands took part in the demonstrations.

22 December 2019 – Modi gave a speech railing against the protests. “You’ve seen how these people are pursuing their own interests,” he says. “The statements made, false videos, provocative, high level people by putting it on social media have committed the crime of spreading confusion and fire.”

September 3, 2020 – Modi’s Twitter account appears to have been hacked, which has been investigated by the social media company. The account, which has 2.5 million followers, is one of a handful of verified accounts linked to the prime minister. The apparent hack comes more than a month after a massive hack that resulted in some of the most prominent accounts on the platform – including those associated with Obama, Joe Biden And Elon Musk – Compromise is being done.
