South Korean pop, or K-pop, and Western music are banned inside North Korea, and some defectors have cited illegally listening to outside music as a factor in their decision to defect.

“When you listen to North Korean music, you don’t have any emotions,” North Korean defector Ryu Hee-jin told the Washington Post in 2019. But when you listen to American or South Korean music, it really gives you chills. So fresh, so relatable, when kids hear this music, the expressions on their faces change.”

Regarding “Friendly Father”, North Korea expert Peter Moody of Korea University told BBC News, “This song father is here Everything is written on it. It’s upbeat, it couldn’t be more catchy, and a rich set of orchestral-sounding sequences couldn’t be more prominent.”

Cambridge University’s Alexandra Leonzini told the outlet that North Korean officials may have tried to create an “earworm” song with simple lyrics that would be easy to sing.

He said, “All artistic output in North Korea should be aimed at the class education of citizens and especially educating them as to why they should feel a sense of gratitude, a sense of loyalty to the Party.”
