Man denied entry to Museum of Modern Art stabs two employees, NYPD says

Two women were stabbed by a man Saturday afternoon inside New York City’s Museum of Modern Art, which had recently been unsubscribed over past incidents, police said.

The New York Police Department said the suspect, a 60-year-old man who knows both MoMA and officers, was not in custody Saturday evening.

John Miller, the NYPD’s deputy commissioner of Intelligence and Counter Terrorism, said the stabbing took place at around 4:15 p.m. when the man arrived at the reception area of the Midtown Manhattan Museum with the intention of watching the film.

Miller said the man was denied because his membership was no longer active, recently as a result of incidents of disorderly conduct, he jumped on a reception desk and stabbed two MoMA employees multiple times.

The NYPD said the women were taken to NYC Health+ Hospital/Bellevue where they were stabilized.

“We’ve been told they’re both going to be fine,” Miller said.

The suspect fled the museum, and police campaigned in the area, but no arrests were made, he said.

Miller said the letter canceling the suspect’s museum membership went out on Friday, but it was not clear whether the suspect knew before his arrival.

Police did not provide additional details about two other incidents involving the man.

Videos from the scene showed museum-goers walking out.

The assault was being investigated. The organization did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
