Maharashtra Congress appoints multi-member electoral panel 2. passed a resolution limiting

A day after the state cabinet decided to reintroduce a multi-member ward system for all municipal councils and corporations except the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Maharashtra Congress executive meeting on Thursday held a multi-member electoral panel. A unanimous resolution was passed to limit the number to two. .

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Nana Patole said, “Yesterday it was decided to form a panel of three in the cabinet, but many of our members felt that it should be a one- or two-member ward.”

Patole said the party had received backlash from local leaders across the state who were opposing a multi-member ward.

The decision to oppose the move came as a surprise even when Congress ministers decided to ratify the decision in the state cabinet.

MPCC working president Naseem Khan said, “MPCC opposes the decision of the government and our executive committee has passed a resolution opposing it. We can meet the CM and it will be taken up in the coordination committee meeting.

PWD minister and senior Congress leader Ashok Chavan, who was present at the cabinet meeting when the proposal was moved, said the decision was a political call and he did not want to comment on the MPCC’s proposal.
