Karachi Weather Updates: Chance of hail with thunderstorms in the city, forecast by meteorologist

KARACHI: Meteorological expert Jawad Memon has predicted that the city may receive hailstorms during the upcoming rains starting today.

“There is a 20-30% chance of hail in relation to the current rainfall,” the meteorologist said, adding that when the weather cools, the water vapor freezes and becomes hail.

He said that Karachi was last hit by hail on December 18, 2017.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted a second round of rain and thundershowers in most parts of Karachi and Sindh starting today.

The Meteorological Department said in a statement that a strong western wave has entered the western and upper parts of the country, which has engulfed most parts of the country. It will remain in different parts of the country for the next 02 to 03 days.

Under the influence of this system, moderate to heavy rains are likely to occur over most of the districts of Sindh from January 4 to 7. In Karachi, however, it is likely to rain for the second time of winter on January 5 and January 6. Metropolis today, said the Met Office.

Lightning is very likely to occur in various parts of Sindh including Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Kambar Shahdadkot, Badin, Thatta, Umarkot and Tharparkar during this period.

Chief meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz said the new system was more powerful than the earlier one.

Meanwhile, Gwadar, Pasni, Ormara and Jiwani areas of Balochistan received heavy rains as a strong western wave entered the country. The weather system is presently present over the southern parts of the province.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority has started rescue efforts after flash floods caused by heavy rains in the coastal areas.
