Huge cache of Chinese police files put up for sale in alleged hack

A vast collection of data on Chinese citizens has reportedly been snatched from a police database by an unknown hacker or hacking group, some of which it checks as legitimate, is being offered for sale. If confirmed, it would be one of the biggest personal data leaks in history.

The cache reportedly contains billions of records stolen from police in Shanghai, including data on a billion Chinese citizens, according to a post advertising its availability by hackers published Thursday on a popular online cybercrime forum. Posts that circulated on social media over the weekend put the price of the leak at 10 bitcoins, or about $200,000.
