Here’s what you can do to prevent mask-related headaches – Bharat Times Hindi News

Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic began, it has become mandatory to wear masks, maintain social distancing and sanitize hands. The central and state governments have suggested citizens to wear masks when they step out of the house, especially in crowded places, even if they have been fully vaccinated. It is quite easy for everyone to sanitize hands and maintain social distance, but wearing a mask for a long time is not possible for everyone. This can cause discomfort, itching, shortness of breath, and headache.

There is no debate that masks have played an important role in reducing or breaking the chain of transmission of the virus during the pandemic. As people have resumed office and are out for longer periods, there has been a significant increase in complaints related to masks. People have complained of headache, restlessness, dehydration and disorientation after wearing the mask for a long time. This is even more difficult for people who suffer from colds, asthma, coughs or skin allergies, but people should follow safety guidelines. And when the benefits of wearing a mask outweigh the disadvantages, then one should not consider removing it.

Let’s understand why you get a headache. Wearing a tight mask for a long time can cause pain in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The TMJ connects a person’s lower jaw to the rest of their skull. The mask can irritate the muscles and tissues near the jaw, and it sends pain signals that may feel like a headache.

How to prevent mask-related headaches:

  • First of all, you should avoid wearing a mask that is tight behind the ears. The hard mask can cause pain in the lower jaw area which can lead to a headache.
  • Do not take extra stress and it is advisable to do some gentle stretches of the neck in between the work.
  • Practice meditation.
  • Incorporate massaging your cheeks and temples into your morning skincare routine.
  • Good posture is very important as TMJ pain can also arise due to poor posture. Improper postures increase muscle tension, which leads to headaches.
  • Pay attention to the position of your jaw and teeth, don’t tighten your jaw muscles and teeth.
  • You can also do some easy jaw exercises.
