Governor signs bills laying ground for postponement of local body elections

Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Friday signed bills that will lay the groundwork for postponing local body elections in Maharashtra till the Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation is restored.

As per these bills, the State Election Commission (SEC) will now decide the polling schedule for local and municipal elections in consultation with the state government.

In addition, the amendments also propose to scrap the delimitation process by the SEC and the determination of wards of civic and local bodies.

A Raj Bhavan official said that the Governor signed the bills and sent them to the government on Friday.

When contacted, a senior SEC official said, “We have been told that the governor has signed the bills. Somebody will challenge it as soon as it comes in the gazette.

The state government had introduced two bills to amend the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act and the Maharashtra Municipal Council, Nagar Panchayat and Industrial Township Act 1965 and the Maharashtra Gram Panchayat Act and the Maharashtra Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti Act 1961. Legislature. The bills were passed unanimously in both the council and the assembly.
