Gashimov Memorial Chess: Anand ends rapid event with two more losses

Indian chess maestro Viswanathan Anand ended his campaign with just one win after losing both his matches in the rapid event at the 7th Vugar Gashimov Memorial Chess Tournament here on Tuesday.

The former world champion Indian lost 0.5-1.5 to Fabiano Caruana of USA in his opening match of the day.

Anand’s only win in the rapid section came against Sankariyar Mamedyarov in the sixth round on Monday. He finished with 5.5 points from seven rounds.

They lost against Russia’s Sergei Karjakin, Hungary’s Richard Rapport, Azerbaijan’s Rauf Mamedov and Czech Republic’s David Navara.

Anand will now participate in the Blitz event starting Wednesday.

This year the Gashimov Memorial Tournament is being played as a rapid and blitz chess tournament.
Blitz matches will be played for two days on Wednesday and Thursday.
