Education Secretary to meet union leaders in bid to avert teachers’ strike

Last-ditch talks will take place on Monday to resolve a teachers’ pay dispute that threatens to disrupt schools across the country.

a member of National Education Association (new in England And Wells will walk out on Wednesday, with more stops planned in the coming weeks.

Federation leaders will meet education secretary Gillian Keegan failed to break the impasse after previous talks.

NEU joint general secretary Kevin Courtney said: “This is the last chance to avoid a strike on Wednesday.

“However, on Friday education Department Failed to meet its evidence deadline to the teachers’ pay review body.

“We can only assume because they know that their recommended increase in teacher pay will not be acceptable to our members and will contradict the evidence they have put forward about teacher recruitment and retention difficulties.

“That said, we hope the Secretary of State will come up with concrete proposals to end this dispute and avert strike action.”

A source close to the education secretary said she would use the meeting to reiterate her call from the weekend for teachers to inform schools if they plan to strike.

The source also said the government would “continue to be open and cooperative in meetings with the unions”.
