There has been an almost three-fold increase in active cases in Maharashtra in the last one month. Health officials predict that the spike in cases may continue for the next week or two, especially in cities like Mumbai, Pune and Thane, due to high mobility for economic compulsions.

Officials gave several reasons behind the sudden surge in the past one week. talking to Indian ExpressAdditional Chief Secretary Dr Pradeep Vyas said that people are meeting more and more are violating the guidelines of Kovid-19.

“Procrastination in following Covid-appropriate behavior is a contributing reason. Also, it has also been observed that people are taking the symptoms of fever and cough lightly and are not getting tested… Also, variants of BA4 and BA5 omicron) are probably increasing in cases,” he said.

In April, the state government lifted all COVID-19 restrictions in the state. It is observed that most of the patients who have been admitted to the hospitals recently are above 60 years of age and suffering from at least two concomitant diseases.

In Maharashtra, 16,36,320 people above 60 years of age have received the third vaccine against Kovid-19 till 31 May.

State Surveillance Officer Dr Pradeep Awte said that many elderly people have not taken booster doses, which can weaken their immunity.

Keeping in mind the slowly rising cases in Mumbai, Chahal advised more testing and surveillance.
