A Guelph couple is donating to help Guelph General Hospital mental health Initiative for employees.

Guelph General Hospital established announced Monday that it has received a $150,000 gift from Bill and Colleen Kornstra. In turn, the Foundation has established the Bill and Colleen Kornstra Health and Wellness Fund.

The fund will support programming and activities that promote, support or advance the mental health and well-being of hospital employees.

“This donation is the first of its kind to the community,” foundation CEO Julie Byzinski said in a statement. “This helps our hospital invest in its most valuable resource, GGH’s staff and physicians.”

Byzinski said the hospital and foundation are very fortunate to have donors like Kornstrass who want to make an impact on the well-being of health care providers and are willing to step beyond the norm.

Some of the money donated has been used to provide chair massages and healthy meals for employees.

“We’re listening to what supports our employees and physicians would like to see,” said Karen Suk-Patrick, vice president of people, culture and community.

“Thanks to KornStraus’ support we will launch additional programs to promote employee well-being.”

According to the news release, the funds are intended to be spent over the next three years and will help the hospital foster a culture of openness around mental health and its importance in the hospital.
