Bengaluru: Heavy rains increase the price of drumsticks from Rs 30 to Rs 353 per kg

Retail prices of drumstick, tomato and beans in Bengaluru have shot up to as high as Rs 80-Rs 350 per kg in Bengaluru as heavy rains affected supplies in some parts of the state.

According to the Horticultural Producers Cooperative Marketing and Processing Society (HOPCOMS), with the increasing demand for drumstick in winter and its unavailability in the market, its price has increased from Rs 30 to Rs 40 last month to Rs 353 now.

talking to Indian ExpressNarayanappa, a trader at Chikballapura market, said, “The price of drumstick has increased due to non-availability of crop due to rains since last one month. The demand for drumstick is high during winters but the rain has spoiled the game.”

Tomato prices have remained high in most retail markets including Hopcoms in the city since the first week of October. In Karnataka, the retail price of tomatoes is Rs 100 per kg in Mangaluru and Tumakuru, Rs 75 in Dharwad, Rs 74 in Mysore, Rs 67 in Shivamogga, Rs 64 in Davanagere and Rs 115 in Bengaluru. Traders said that at present most of the tomatoes come from Maharashtra. Earlier it cost less than Rs 50 per kg and was grown in many parts of Karnataka.

According to the rate chart of HOPCOMS Bangalore, the price of capsicum has gone up to Rs 120 per kg, while that of beans to Rs 105 per kg, peas at Rs 220 and carrots at Rs 87 per kg.
