Halifax Regional Police say they have accused a taxi driver of sexually assaulting a female passenger.

In a release on Thursday, police say they received a report about the alleged sexual assault on the evening of May 23.

According to police, a taxi driver allegedly picked up a passenger in downtown Halifax and later sexually assaulted a woman he did not know.

The taxi driver was arrested in Halifax on June 28.

Police Spokesperson Const. John McLeod would not provide any further details about the alleged incident, in which the woman was picked up by the driver, and where the sexual assault allegedly took place.

“It is still before the court, so we cannot release any details about the incident,” he said.

According to police, Marwan Al Ali, 50, is facing a case of sexual assault and is to appear in court at a later date.
