With 283 cases in the last week, Delhi’s dengue cases cross 1,000-mark

According to a civic report on vector-borne diseases released on Monday, dengue cases in Delhi crossed the 1,000-mark this year, with 283 fresh cases being reported in the last week.

According to the report, one death due to dengue has been reported in September and a total of 1,006 dengue cases till October 23 – the highest number of cases for the same period since 2018. Out of the total cases of this season, 665 cases have been registered this month till 23rd October.

Municipal officials said there has been a sudden spurt in cases in the last two weeks, adding to the pressure on hospitals in the city.

The number of dengue deaths in the years prior to 2020 was two (2019); four (2018); 10 (2017); and 10 (2016), as per the official tally maintained by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Cases of vector-borne diseases are usually reported between July and November, but this period may extend to mid-December.

Dengue is spread by several species of mosquitoes within the genus Aedes. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, and a measles-like skin rash.
