While You Were Sleeping: Perez Wins Monaco GP, Alcarz Storms French Open Quarter, Premier League One Return

Sergio Pérez rebounded from orders from the Red Bull team, which did not allow him to race to victory a week earlier to take his first Formula One victory of the season at the rain-hit Monaco Grand Prix.

Ferrari cost Perez his third career F1 victory after pole-sitter Charles Leclerc earned a questionable strategy call of a victory on his home circuit.

Although Leclerc finished the race for the first time in four tries, he finished fourth and allowed world champion Max Verstappen to extend his lead in the points standings. Carlos Sainz Jr finished second for Ferrari and Verstappen third for Red Bull.

Verstappen now leads Leclerc by nine points in the standings; Leclerc has two victories this season, with Verstappen and Perez combined for five wins and Ferrari claiming all seven races.

But Monaco’s city-street victory went to Verstappen’s teammate just a week after Perez ordered Verstappen to take the lead during the Spanish Grand Prix. Leclerc was ruled out of the race with an engine failure and Red Bull chose to capitalize by manipulating the finish to give Verstappen victory in Spain.

French Open: Alkaraz beats Khachanov to reach quarter-finals

Carlos Alcaraz led Karen Khachanov to a 6-1 6-4 6-4 victory over Karen Khachanov to reach the quarter-finals of the French Open on Sunday and extend his winning streak to 14 matches.

The 19-year-old, who rocked the tennis world this year, became the youngest player in 29 years to reach two Grand Slam quarterfinals after making the last eight at the US Open.

“It has been a great match from my side. I played really well from start to finish of the match,” he said. “I knew I had to be really focused from the start.”

He needed just 29 minutes to storm the first set with his special mix of raw power, punishing forehands and deft drop shots that made his 26-year-old rival grow old.

World No. 25 and quarter-finalist in Paris in 2019, Khachanov managed to serve early in the second set, but the Spaniard broke him 3-3, and never looked back.

Nottingham Forest return to the Premier League

Nottingham Forest return to the Premier League after a 23-year absence as they beat Huddersfield Town 1-0 in the championship playoff final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

The deciding goal came in the 43rd minute when Huddersfield defender Levi Colville deflected James Garner’s shot into his own net.

Former European champions Forrest were relegated from the top flight in 1999 and were joined by Bournemouth and Fulham, who won automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Steve Cooper’s side were victors deserving of dominating the first half and then maintained their lead without Huddersfield truly jeopardizing their goal.

Forest guard Joe Worrall said, “I am very proud of the players, the staff, the fans.”

“We’ve been fantastic all season – we were really unlucky that we didn’t go up on our own. We’ve played honestly and we play football the right way.”

The only scare came when Town’s Harry Toffolo went down in the box under challenge from Jack Colback but referee Jon Moss booked the Huddersfield wing-back for emulation.

Forrest, who reached the playoff final by defeating Sheffield United, were the English champions under Brian Clough in 1978 and went on to win the European Cup in 1979 and 1980.

The East Midlands side had a terrific start to the season, sacking manager Chris Houghton when they were bottom of the league after taking just one point from their opening seven games.

Former Swansea City manager Cooper took over and turned the campaign around, leaving Forrest in fourth place, two points behind third-placed Huddersfield.

Forest have struggled to pull out of the championship and Cooper was the 14th manager they hired in 10 years, since Billy Davis left in the summer of 2011.
