Gorakhpur: With the onset of monsoon in the region, a group of women in Maharajganj district performed a ritual by soaking the local MLA and municipality president in an earthen tub to please the rain god ‘Indra’. This region has an age-old belief that bathing with mud on the head of the city pleases the rain god who brings rain to the region.
The women of the Pipardeura area in Maharajganj also sang while giving a mud bath to BJP MLA Jaimangal Kanojiya and Nagar Palika chairman Krishna Gopal Jaiswal.
Munni Devi, one of the women, said, “It is believed that bathing with mud on the head of the city pleases Indra Dev. Less rain will affect the paddy yield.”
“It is also believed that children bathe in mud to please Indra Dev and it is locally known as Kaal Kalauti,” he said.

An age-old tradition to give a mud bath: BJP MLA Jaimangal Kanojiya
MLA Kanojiya and Nagar Palika chairman Jaiswal became happily ready to take a mud bath for rain.
Kanojia said, “People are restless due to the scorching sun and bathing in mud to please Indra Dev is an age-old tradition. The women of the city made us bathe with mud for rain.”
Jaiswal said that a drought-like situation is in front of us, to please the rain god, women followed the age-old tradition of the region.
