ISLAMABAD: Urban floods caused by heavy overnight rains wreaked havoc in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, and especially in lower Sector H-13 of the capital, where rainwater entered homes.

The Managing Director of the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) said in a statement that Islamabad and Rawalpindi have recorded 60 mm of rain.

He said that the water level in Nala Lai – a natural stream flowing from Rawalpindi – was recorded at 17 feet.

Army units have been called in to deal with any emergency, the official said. He said that they are monitoring the water level in the drain, adding that the water level is gradually receding.

MD Vasa said that due to the torrential rains, the walls of a drain in Sector H-13 of Islamabad collapsed and several vehicles got stuck in the water.

Meanwhile, the Rawalpindi Commissioner said that the concerned departments have been put on high alert in view of the possibility of flooding in Nala Lai. He said that they are monitoring the water level in the drain and the Vasa machinery has been alerted to deal with any situation.

He directed the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to keep its alert system updated and timely inform people about any danger of floods. He directed the authority to give a report in this regard by immediately draining the water from the low-lying areas.
