VBU registrar resigns amid protests by students

Vishwa Bharati University (VBU) registrar Ashish Agarwal on Tuesday resigned from his post amid protests by students over their pending demands. VBU Interim Public Relations Officer Atig Ghosh said, “Ashish Agarwal has requested me to inform the media that he is no longer the Registrar of VBU. He has resigned and hence he will not face the media.”

The development comes against the backdrop of the ongoing student protests at the Central University. Since February 28, a section of students has been protesting for several demands, including the reopening of hostels. Two students also went on hunger strike. Last night, students gheraoed the registrar and other officials at the Bolpur campus at the university’s Bangladesh Bhawan to protest against the university’s decision to “fail students who do not take online exams”.

On March 1, the protesting students gheraoed the registrar’s office. He was later freed by the police personnel following the orders of the Calcutta High Court.
