LONDON: British police on Saturday arrested a man armed with weapons in the grounds of Windsor Castle.
Thames Valley Police said the security breach occurred at 8:30 a.m. on Christmas Day. A 19-year-old from Southampton is in custody.
“The man has been arrested on suspicion of breach of a protected site or trespass and possession of an offensive weapon. He is currently in custody,” said Thames Valley Police Superintendent Rebecca Mears. “We can confirm that security procedures were in place moments after the man entered the arena and he did not enter any buildings.”
The members of the royal family have been informed.
Queen Elizabeth II, who is spending her Christmas holiday in Windsor, has decided not to stay at Sandringham, the royal estate in eastern England where she traditionally spends the festive season with family.
