Windsor Castle intruder detained under Mental Health Act, police say

According to the statement, a crossbow was recovered after a search of the intruder.

“The man has been taken into custody and has undergone a mental health assessment – since then a section has been imposed under the Mental Health Act and he is under the care of medical professionals,” police said.

“The entire circumstances of this incident are being investigated by Metropolitan Police Specialist Operations,” the statement said.

Officials said the man did not enter any building.

The 95-year-old Queen was celebrating Christmas at Windsor Castle after deciding not to travel to her usual Christmas destination, Sandringham, due to the pandemic. He was accompanied by his son, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, in Windsor.

Although not common, incursions do occasionally occur in royal palaces. Perhaps the most famous incident is from 1982 when a man named Michael Fagan, then 31, climbed a wall of Buckingham Palace, crawled through an open window and made his way into the bedroom of Queen Elizabeth II, who was sleeping.

The queen was not harmed, although the incursion raised serious questions about the security of the palace, especially when it emerged that her repeated attempts to call for help were ignored.
