On the morning of June 16, 2008, she recalled, she had made Kelly breakfast, but she was not feeling well, so she lay down, brought Kelly into the bedroom with her, and turned on the TV. They were living in Casey’s childhood home with George and Cindy.
Casey said she fell asleep for a while and woke up from her father asking where Kelly was. She said she went frantically looking for him outside in the yard, then went around the house to find George holding a “soaked” Kelly. “I can see him standing with her in his arms,” Casey said. “And handed him over to me and told me it was my fault, that I did this, that I did this. And I just collapsed with him in my arms.”
Casey said that Kelly felt “heavy” and “cold” and that she herself was “hysterical”. George, taking Kelly from her, “immediately softens his tone and tells me, ‘It’s going to be okay,'” Casey said. “She was ‘going to be fine.’ That’s what he told me. I wanted to believe him because I wanted him to be okay.”
After the interview paused for a few seconds, tears streaming down her face, she continued, “And I don’t know how long I sat outside, I don’t know where he went. He took it from me and he left.” I know she went back in through the curtain door and she went back into the house. And I don’t know where she went. And I don’t know what she did. I just want her back.”
Testifying at Casey’s trial, George denied any knowledge of how Casey died or any involvement in the disposal of her body. “I would have done everything humanly possible to save my granddaughter if what was said had happened,” he said, adding that he “knew nothing happened to Kelly” until the day of her death.
