Tambaram, the gateway to Chennai from southern Tamil Nadu is now a municipal corporation and an ordinance was issued to this effect, the state government said in Chennai on Thursday. The move comes after Municipal Administration Minister KN Nehru’s recent announcement in the assembly that Tambaram municipality and four adjoining municipalities, nagar panchayats and gram panchayats would be merged to form a single municipal corporation.
“In view of the rapid pace of urbanization in the state, it is imperative to reorganize the urban local bodies,” said an explanatory statement published in the state gazette.
Thanjavur police on Wednesday seized 200 kg of ganja worth about Rs 1 crore from an ambulance. Based on a tip-off, the police checked the vehicles and found five sacks in a private ambulance. Upon opening, the bag was found full of ganja.
According to the police, the ambulance was carrying ganja from Andhra Pradesh. Driver Marcel Terence Raja (32) has been driving an ambulance for the last 15 years. Officials said that he was involved in illegal business for the last two-three months.
Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder Dr Ramadoss said his party will not rest until 10.5% sub-reservation for Vanniyar community within 20% quota for most backward class (MBC) in government jobs and education does not get restored. The reaction comes after the Madras High Court on Monday canceled the Vanniyar quota. Ramdas claimed that the Vanniyar community has lagged behind in terms of education and employment.
In a letter addressed to the youth of the Vanniyar community, he said: “We have only lost one territory, not the war. We are not defeated, it has been announced that we have lost, that’s all. The judgment of the Madras High Court is not without criticism, it has many flaws.
