Surat: 35-year-old man arrested for ‘rape and murder’ of girl child

Surat police on Monday arrested a 35-year-old man for raping and murdering a two-year-old girl. The minor girl went missing on November 4, when she was last seen playing outside her house.

The girl’s family members then approached the police, who checked the CCTV footage from the surrounding areas and found that a man was taking the girl away.

On Sunday, the police found the dead body of the girl near the bushes of a dying and printing mill.

A case was registered against unidentified accused under sections 302 (murder) and 363 (kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code on Sunday, and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act were added to the FIR on Monday.

On Monday afternoon, the police identified the accused and arrested him from his house.

Surat Police Commissioner Ajay Tomar said, “Around 1000 policemen, including seven teams from the city’s crime branch, a team of the Special Operations Group and 12 different teams, were involved in the case. More than 15,000 people were questioned and our teams checked more than 200 CCTV footages and finally the accused was arrested today.

“The accused took the victim to a secluded place where he raped her and later strangled her. After committing the crime, the accused stayed in the friend’s room and returned to his rented house on Sunday evening. The accused is a resident of Bihar and is addicted to watching porn movies. We are questioning him to get more details,” said the inspector of the police station concerned.
