The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to former Twitter India chief Manish Maheshwari on a plea by the UP Police challenging the Karnataka High Court order directing him to file a case related to the viral video of an attack on an elderly man in Ghaziabad. was provided protection from arrest.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana asked M Maheshwari to respond to a plea that restrained him from taking coercive action against the Karnataka High Court’s June 24 order directing the Ghaziabad police to take action against Maheshwari. It was directed not to take any coercive action against him and to interrogate him virtually.

Convinced that the Ghaziabad police would challenge the order of the Karnataka High Court to protect him from arrest and allow his virtual interrogation in the case, Maheshwari has already sought to pre-empt any ex-parte order against him. A warning has been filed in the Supreme Court.

Maheshwari wanted the apex court to hear him before passing any order on any petition filed by the Ghaziabad Police against the Karnataka High Court in connection with the Loni assault case – a video of which had gone viral on Twitter.

The case pertains to the circulation of a video in which Abdul Shamad Saif – an elderly man – was seen saying that he was allegedly beaten up by some youths who forced him to chant “Jai Shri Ram” on June 5. Was. A large number of users posted a muted video of the incident on social media.

But later many users deleted the video as the police said that it was the handiwork of some youth of the same community.

Ghaziabad Police said that the video was shared to incite communal violence. He had issued a notice to Maheshwari, who lives in Bengaluru, on June 21 and asked him to report to the Loni Border police station on June 24 at 11.30 am to record his statement, but he did not turn up. Later, the Karnataka HC granted him protection from arrest.

Loni Border Police, Ghaziabad on June 15 registered an FIR against Rana Ayyub and four others under IPC sections 153, 153A, 295A, 505 and 120B for sharing the video without verifying the authenticity of the video. The Bombay High Court had earlier granted protection to Job from arrest.
