Colombo: Sri Lanka’s main city, Colombo, was calm on Thursday as people await the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who fled to the Maldives to escape a popular uprising that has engulfed the country’s economic crisis.
Rajapaksa was expected to travel to Singapore, although his final destination was unclear. His decision on Wednesday to make his colleague Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe acting president triggered more protests, with protesters storming parliament and the premier’s office and demanding that he step down as well.
